The world lost more than a country music legend with the passing of Dolly Parton at age 80. We lost a songwriter, actress, philanthropist, storyteller, and one of those rare entertainers who seemed to belong to everyone.
For more than six decades, Dolly entertained generations with songs such as Jolene, 9 to 5, Coat of Many Colors, and I Will Always Love You. But perhaps her greatest legacy wasn't something that could be found on a record.
It was the way she used her success to help others.
Through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, millions of children around the world have received free books—often beginning when they were babies—helping families discover the joy of reading together. She also supported education, health care, disaster relief, and numerous charitable causes throughout her life.
And through it all, Dolly never seemed to forget where she came from.
Born into a large family in the mountains of Tennessee, she turned humble beginnings into an extraordinary life while maintaining the humor, kindness, faith in people, and unmistakable personality that made millions feel as though they knew her personally.
Dolly once said:
“If you see someone without a smile, give 'em yours.”
That may be one of the simplest ways to describe the legacy she leaves behind.
The music will continue. The movies will still make us laugh. Children will continue opening books bearing the Imagination Library name.
And somewhere, someone will hear Jolene start playing and immediately turn up the volume.
